How to Use Olaplex No.3 at Home (And Why It's Not a Shampoo)
If you've bought a bottle of Olaplex No.3 and aren't quite sure what to do with it, you're not alone. It's the most misunderstood product in the entire Olaplex range — mostly because it doesn't work like anything else in your shower.
Here's the short version: Olaplex No.3 is a pre-wash treatment, not a conditioner. It goes on before you shampoo, on dry or towel-dried hair, and it needs time to actually do its job. Skip any of that and you're just using an expensive leave-in for ten minutes — not the bond-rebuilding treatment it's designed to be.
What Olaplex No.3 Actually Does
Every time you colour, bleach, heat-style, or even brush your hair aggressively, you break some of the disulfide bonds that give each strand its strength. Enough broken bonds and hair starts to feel gummy when wet, snap when you brush it, and lose its shape entirely.
No.3 uses the same patented bond-building chemistry as the professional treatment your colourist uses in-salon (No.1 and No.2), just in a lower, at-home-safe concentration. It doesn't coat the hair with silicones to fake smoothness — it actually relinks broken bonds. That's why it's the one product colourists consistently recommend to clients who colour, bleach, or heat-style regularly.
How to Use It Properly
- Start on dry or towel-dried hair — not soaking wet, not freshly washed. Damp is fine; dripping is not.
- Apply generously from mid-length to ends, where damage accumulates. You can bring a small amount closer to the roots, but the ends need the most.
- Comb it through with a wide-tooth comb so it's evenly distributed.
- Leave it in for at least 10 minutes. For noticeably damaged or over-processed hair, leaving it in for 20–30 minutes (or even overnight under a shower cap) gives it more time to work.
- Shampoo and condition as normal afterward — No.3 rinses out completely, so this step isn't optional.
- Use it once or twice a week. More isn't necessarily better; consistency matters more than frequency.
Common Mistakes That Waste the Product
- Using it as a conditioner substitute. It's not designed to detangle or soften on its own — that's what your regular conditioner is for.
- Rinsing it out too soon. Bond-building takes time. A 2-minute rinse defeats the purpose.
- Applying it to soaking wet hair. Too much water dilutes the treatment and reduces how well it can penetrate the strand.
- Skipping it after heat styling or colour appointments — this is exactly when hair needs it most.
Who Benefits Most
If any of the following sound familiar, No.3 earns its place in your routine:
- You colour or bleach your hair regularly (especially if you go lighter than your natural shade)
- You use hot tools most days
- Your hair feels "gummy" or overly stretchy when wet
- You've noticed more breakage or split ends than usual
- You've had a keratin, smoothing, or chemical straightening treatment recently
If your hair is in generally healthy condition and you don't colour or heat-style often, you may not need it weekly — once every couple of weeks as maintenance is plenty.
Getting the Best Results
At-home No.3 treatments work best alongside a proper in-salon Olaplex treatment every few months, which uses a higher-strength version of the same bond-building technology plus No.2. If you're not sure how damaged your hair actually is, or want a treatment plan tailored to your colour history, our stylists can take a look and recommend what your hair actually needs — not just what's trending.
